Tape measures for site and workshop

A tape measure is the first thing out of the belt on site and in the workshop. Blade width decides how far the tape stands out before it folds: a 25 mm or 32 mm blade reaches further than a narrow 12.7 mm or 19 mm one, and that counts as soon as you are measuring alone and have to hook the far end.

Then choose on finish. For structural work and carpentry an ordinary version is enough; for finer work a blade with high-contrast graduations and a brake that holds without jerking pays off. The coating on the first few centimetres protects exactly the part that wears fastest. The hook has to float by its own thickness, so that an internal and an external measurement give the same reading. If you work in dust and damp every day, look for a closed case and a rubber jacket that survives a drop onto concrete.

For measurements where hundredths matter, a dial test indicator is the right instrument. The other manual measuring equipment sits under analogue measuring instruments.
